Reforestación y restauración ecológica gracias a EMS

En los últimos años, desde Esmeraldas Mining Services (EMS) se han enfocado en recuperar los suelos que se vieron afectados por décadas de minería superficial. Este proceso ha sido liderado por el Departamento de Gestión Ambiental, que a partir de diferentes iniciativas está logrando nuevamente un Occidente de Boyacá que no solo brille por el verde de sus esmeraldas, sino también por el verde de su vegetación.

 

Desde hace 9 años, en la Unidad Minera Puerto Arturo se inició el proyecto del vivero forestal, donde se realizan procesos de germinación, trasplante, crecimiento y adaptación al clima de diversas especies vegetales como Caracolí, Caoba, Búcaro y Cedro Rosado, obteniendo excelentes resultados.  En el 2022 por ejemplo, lograron germinar 8.4 kilos de semillas, de las cuales 7 mil plántulas lograron ser trasplantadas a bolsa y finalmente 5.143 individuos lograron adaptarse.

Garantizar la supervivencia de estas plantaciones representa un desafío que requiere conocimiento técnico y dedicación para sobreponerse a problemas como hongos, plagas, falta de nutrientes en el suelo, entre otros. Durante el año anterior se realizaron 14 germinaciones, tan solo 2 tuvieron problemas de hongos o humedad y 12 culminaron exitosamente el proceso, demostrando que los controles fitosanitarios realizados por el departamento ambiental tienen un alto nivel de efectividad.

 

Este vivero, además de servir a la Unidad Minera, también ha sido fuente de beneficios para todo el departamento. De allí se han donado más de 4 mil individuos forestales a la Corporación Autónoma de Boyacá (Corpoboyacá) que han sido utilizados para la restauración ecológica y preservación de ecosistemas en sitios tan importantes como el Parque Natural Regional Serranía Las Quinchas, zona ambientalmente protegida considerada de gran valor ambiental.

Además del vivero, desde el año 2018 también se han venido desarrollando labores de reforestación en la zona de influencia de la Unidad Minera. Ya se han logrado establecer 18 reforestaciones que representan más de 6 mil individuos sembrados en lugares que se consideran de vital importancia como zonas cercanas a las fuentes hídricas o donde reposaba anteriormente infraestructura minera como el sector de Águilas, Piratas, entre otros.

 

Gracias a estas iniciativas se sigue demostrando que con Minería Social Verde es posible la extracción de minerales de manera ambientalmente responsable y sostenible. Desde las Compañías Muzo Colombia seguimos comprometidos con el progreso y bienestar del Occidente de Boyacá. Un occidente que no solo sea reconocido por sus bellas gemas verdes, sino también por la abundancia de su vegetación y vida silvestre.
